Johnny was raised in Glenville, New York, with his sister Sue.
Their mother died in a car accident, and their father was later imprisoned for manslaughter.
The siblings were raised by their aunt and later by Sue.
Johnny and Sue joined Reed Richards and Ben Grimm on a space flight that exposed them to cosmic rays.
This exposure transformed Johnny, granting him the ability to engulf his body in flames, fly, and project fire.
